Kensington Computer BagsLondon by Design With Paul Smith
Forget bad-boy rockers and artists bad boy. The coolest designer in Britannia, as any drying will tell you, is the designer Paul Smith. The first to put common sense in Savile Row, Smith has spent the last three decades to take the pet costume (not to mention the Filofax and boxers) and transforming, by color, cut and style, in the twinkling of look at the spiritual tradition. A Nottingham boy made good, he opened his first shop in 1970 in an alley with a few basic pieces, now its collections include women's clothing, kids clothing, casual wear, formal wear - you name it the designs, from links with toothbrushes. Indeed, like the British Empire fell, the Smith empire has risen and these days the designer spends seven months of jet between its outposts in London, New York, Paris, Hong Kong, Taiwan , Singapore, Manila, and Japan, where Smithmania has created the need for the 200 stores. The Paul Smith website, www.paulsmith.co.uk / www.psmake.com (you can actually "walk" in the store and check the goods), receives 1000 visits a day, and later its "store within a house, occupying a Georgian town house in his neighborhood of London, Notting Hill, is almost as popular attraction at Buckingham Palace. The store, he says, is "a statement against the minimalism and the chic black and white." It is not surprising for someone whose socks are Crayola-bright, he hates the homogenization. As for what it likes, well, read on.

A perfect day in London
I begin with a swim at the Royal Automobile Club, Pall Mall, a beautiful former private club. Then I go to Patisserie Valerie for breakfast. It is on the way to my office in Covent Garden and has a nice atmosphere - full of film people. They are supposed to serve growing pretty good but I'm pretty boring English, I order toast. Then I could swing by the Photographers' Gallery, and Hamilton - is a fantastic work achieved by Helmut Newton, David Bailey and many others. To the British and Russian contemporary painting, I went to the Gallery Caelt, just across the street from Lacy Gallery, which has fabulous antique frames.

I do not really have lunch, then in the afternoon I sometimes head to the Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood in the East End near Brick Lane Market, a good place to see some unkempt London. I am interested to mind that toys design, because there's nobody harder to please a child. I have about 300 toy robots, including a dinosaur walking. In summer, another place I go for inspiration is the Chelsea Physic Garden, which is open only on Wednesday and Sunday afternoon. It is especially a serious garden devoted to medicinal plants. I'm especially partial to the colors of flowers as they fade. The garden is managed by staff and volunteers, and is often full of lovely old ladies serving tea and cakes.

For dinner, I stay in Notting Hill (I've gotten lazy). I like Alastair Little, near my house is intimate, with a small daily menu, which means you do not have to think too much. The food is light, focusing on simple Italian dishes. I also Assaggi, but it is small and you have to book weeks ahead. The Head of Sardinia, and he does wonderful grilled fish. The best fish and chips in London is Geales, just behind my local cinema. They serve wine, which is good because you can have your fish-and-chips and fed up too. Windsor Castle pub food not great: oyster sausages and mash, and Guinness. When it is sunny enough for a picnic, I like Holland Park. It's full of rabbits and squirrels, and there is a Japanese garden. I will Arrangements Mr. Christian, grab a little Parma ham, bresao.
