Can you help me choose a college major? Your opinions needed:) Hello everyone. I'm having a really hard time choosing a college major. I'll tell you a little about myself and my goals and I hope (and would really appreciate it!) If you can recommend a major in the list, I'll post a bit later in this message.
My biggest interest of all wildlife. I am also very interested in the environment, followed by earth sciences and biological sciences. In a future job, I would like job prospects to be very good. I also want my work to be with something I like (who does not? Lol) and it is a well-paid job or have the opportunity to travel, but not necessarily both. One important thing to me is having something versatile, that is a job where I could live in a large metropolitan area or boonies.
My ultimate dream would be to have a practice of employment with the wildlife as well, but not necessarily something I need, just something that I absolutely love. I can not think of anything that would make me happier. When you think of me, think DNR uniform or zoo. : PI know that those jobs are rare, so I will not, but it perfectly describes my top interests.
My worst weakness of the school and outside the complex mathematics. I do not understand, I have never and will never be.
As for the list, I narrowed it down from the catalog of my school. My school has a national reputation for agriculture in particular areas associated (I mention where I go, but feel a bit awkward about it on the net, if you really want to know what I can PM to you lol.) My choice would be # 1 Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences, but I'm afraid of job prospects and pay. I thought maybe I could eliminate the anxiety by opting for the management of the environment. (What I could do something with wind, solar, etc. power with this perhaps? If that is versatile, this would be great. I would go for it, but my ultimate dream to have hands on Working with wildlife and working in a zoo setting is essentially zero.) My other two choices are Agronomy and Geographic Information Science, but I'm not quite as interested, but they seem good in practice and could tie it in my interest to the environment, land and bio, etc..
If you could honestly recommend this a fun and smart choice would I want more than anything! At this point, I'm just looking for a degree, perhaps a master, if my grades and finances delay but it is not a guarantee of good at this point. Where can I go with a BS in one of these groups? Could I make my size? Thank you very much!
Environmental management is a good thing, but make sure you have enough quantative course (research design, statistics) so that you are more employable. You will probably need higher education, unless you go into something more science-y. I just met someone who does not fish and wildlife road, but I have with the federal government, and they paid for his mastery. With a background sound science, everything will be fine. A master's program could provide an allowance if you teach science courses UG!
I believe that wildlife and fisheries would be closer to what you want to do, but I heard the pay is crap.
You might be a veterinarian for wildlife? (If it exists.)
Environmental Management sounds like a winner! We'll need it!
Major in biology. Just plain biology. Then you can get a job in a zoo, go to medical school, a biologist (my friend) or to teach. There is general enough, strong enough and that you will make good $ whatever you do. In addition, it is a recognizable degree liaise potential employers. Envioronmental science or something like that people can not hook as much as a degree in biology solids.
I know this will not help, but this work in a zoo / part time veterinarian.
