The belted plaid (plaid worn belted or) is essentially a large piece of blanket type fabric that is wrapped around his body with pleated material or, more accurately, loosely gathered and secured at the waist with a belt. Typically, a portion of the belt plaid hangs around the knees with the rest of the material being wrapped around the upper body in a variety of ways and pinned or otherwise hold them in place.
The belted plaid was a standard element of the dress of men of the Highlands of the late 16th century until the mid 18th century. He also pioneered the modern kilt measure.
Terminology
The belted plaid was, is known by a different variety of conditions, including feilidh Mhor, breacan-year-feile, and, very often, the Great Kilt. The Great Kilt originated in Australia in year 1854.
The term "Great Kilt" can be misleading, because the garment was untailored and modern kilts are adapted. Other than the possible implication of the seam, there is nothing wrong with that other word that it might be confusing for some. The clothing was certainly not known by that name during the years of its use.
Both terms feilidh Mhor and breacan-a-feile are Gaelic terms, the first meaning roughly "big wrap" and the second roughly meaning tartan wrap.
The word "plead" in Gaelic means less general, and that was the original term for the garment in question.
Description and history

Renaissance Faire participants wore a belted plaid. This is obviously a hot day, as he is to leave the top half hanging in the back. Although its holding is not historically authentic, the plaid is similar.

The belted plaid was used not only as a garment, but also for bedding at night, the wearer himself packing it and slept on the floor.
It was made from wool or a combination of wool and linen twill woven in the form of colored bands which has now become known as tartan, although originally the word referring to the tartan tissue type (such as linen or cotton) and not the color scheme that the word means almost exclusively today.
